Who is James Gregory?

Create a well-developed paragraph that characterizes James Gregory from the film Farwell Bafana. Clearly state the type of person he is and find a quotation that accurately supports your opinion. Be certain to describe how the quotation fits your description of James and summarize your paragraph by stating something you have learned through his life. Your task:
  1. Describe the character of James Gregory.
  2. Find a quotation to support your opinion
  3. State something that you have learned from his life
  4. Avoid using “I” or “My” statements
The paragraph is about the character traits- his personality- and not about the movie or his job. Be careful not to plot summarize your paragraph. If you summarize the film, or just summarize his life on Robben Island, you are writing off topic.  The focus is on describing his personality and the type of person he was during a time of social change in South Africa.Be  certain to focus on:
        • words (adjectives) that best describe his personality.
        • a quotation that is only being used by you that focuses on his personality, character.
        • a paragraph is a paragraph.  DO not separate the sentences into various groups.

                1. Integrity is the art of standing by your moral principles and doing what is right. even if it is unpopular. In life, our beliefs will constantly be challenged by others and often times it is much easier to avoid conflict than to stand up for what we believe. It separates leaders from followers. James Gregory, the man from the autobiographical film, Farwell Bafana, is not a person who would avoid conflict for the sake of peace if it meant going against his own moral judgment. In his life, James demonstrated a willingness to challenge the popular beliefs of Apartheid in South Africa even if it left him unpopular with his colleagues. His courage, independence and determination to stand with Mandela could best be summed up with words of Mark Twain, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear.” Similar to James, he could not remove the fear from his life but he learned to master it to stay true to himself and his beliefs. Needless to say, we could all learn something from Mr. Gregory.

                3. In the film about Nelson Mandela James first was a person that belived that the black people were terrorists and that all the black people wanted the white people dead. He was influenced by the government in South Africa to believe that the black wanted the land for themselves. Gregory became a man that stood for the black peoples during the movie. His relationship with Mandela made him see through another perspective. James started to help Mandela and wanted to help the black to live in peace with the white in South Africa. “To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity” This quote is words for Mandela about human rights and that people have to get the same rights as everybody else without excuse. The film told that black people matters just as much as our life’s and we have to respect each other, all people is good in different ways.

                4. James Gregory from the film Farwell Bafana, was one of few people who wanted to help the black people for a long time ago. Gregory spent much time with the freedom fighter, Nelson Mandela, which led to that Gregory wanted the black and white people to live in peace. “You must be the change you wish to see in the world”, is a quotation who captures Gregory’s courage. The quotation tells us that if we want the world to change, we need to make changes. Gregory wanted everyone to be treated equal, therefore he tried to help the black people, instead of treating them bad like everyone else. This is something many can learn something of. If you know something is wrong, don’t continue doing it just because everyone else does. If nobody had dared to resist others, then discrimination still had been as badly it was before.

I have learnd that everybody can change and that more about how bad the black was treated.

                6. James Gregory is the main character in the film Farwell Bafana. His character changed a lot. In the beginning of the film he was determined that the black people where terrorists, and that they where going to steal the country from all the people who were living there. He did not have respect for the blacks and his behavior was characterized by prejudice. His attitude throughout the film started to change, he became acquainted with Mandela, and started to realize that his job as a prison guard was killing innocent people, just because of their skin color. Abraham Lincoln once had a quote; “These men ask for just the same thing, fairness, and fairness only. This, so far as in my power, they and all others, shall have.” This quote is describing how Gregory felt after he realized that what he was doing was wrong. The message in the film is telling people that everyone deserves fairness, and to be treated with respect, regardless of the color of your skin.

                10. As we can see in the movie, Farwell Bafana, the coloured didn’t have the same rights as the whites. The coloured fought for their beliefs and rights. James Gregory, who is guarding Nelson Mandela’s cell, start to see things from other perspectives. He changes his mind about the coloured people. As we all know, it requires a lot of mental strength to go against the society and what your own leader has told you to do, but James were one of these strong persons who dared to go against the society to change it. “It's better to walk alone than with a crowd going in the wrong direction.” This quotation fits James Gregory because he is the person who doesn’t follow the people who are against coloured people, but stands out and take action to change the world. People should look at James as a teacher or an idol. He teaches us that if we set a goal, are strong enough and take action, we will change things.

                11. James Gregory

James Gregory was a racist at first, but he changed. He was most likely a racist because most of the Europeans in South Africa at that time were racists. When he worked at the prison on Robben Island he saw how the black peoples were and he understood that we are all the same. As Nelson Mandela quoted “people are not born hating, they learn hating”. He started to care about the black ones. He was very brave that did that since everybody else were racists. James Gregory went from being a racist to being a caring person. Maybe one of the reasons he changed was because he grew up with black peoples that lived at a farm. After I saw how his life was I have learnt that everyone can change no matter what the situation is.

                12. James Gregory was a man that was a Great Britain solider. He was very rude whit the black peoples. When he was in South Africa he changed his way to see things. He started to see that the things they do with the black were not good. He experienced that the things the British does with the black was not good at all, he learned much of Mandela. He learned that everybody is worth the same, the skin colour has nothing to do with the soul in the person. He saw that humans are humans, and that everybody should have the same rights. The quotation is: we`re not unique. We just may be a little more mobilized at this particular moment. I have learned that everybody can change and more about how bad the black was treated. They were hold as slaves, they could not talk they’re language, they had no private life. If they didn’t do as the soldiers said they got whipped or even maybe killed.

                13. James Gregory was the main character in farewell Bafana, and James was really racist and mean against the coloured. He would treat them differently, not show them any respect and he wouldn’t hesitate to punish them physically. As James is guarding Nelson Mandela´s cell, he starts to see that they mean no harm, and this makes him see them as people and not animal. He wanted to help them get their rights in the society so they could also live in peace. This is really brave of him, because his fellow guards are starting to call him names, and for him it takes a lot of courage to still support the blacks even at his own expense. Ralph Waldo Emerson: “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” This quote fits the personality of James. What people can learn from him is that you have to stand up for what you think is right.

                14. James Gregory was a British prison guard, who lived in South-Africa with his family. In the beginning of the movie he was a racist man, who only thought badly about the black Africans in South-Africa. He was brainwashed by the state to think that the black people were terrorists. In the movie he was given a new job as prison guard for the biggest black freedom fighter in the country, Nelson Mandela. James began to talk with him, and the otter prisoners, and he found them not as terrorists, but as normal people who wanted a better life for their people. James became a god friend of Nelson, and he did not support the state longer. He wanted to get a free South-Africa, were all could live together as one.

                15. In the film Farwell Bafana, James Gregory is the main character. He is a prison guard in the prison at Robben Island. On Robben Island they keep black prisoners, including the African National Leader, Nelson Mandela. Because James speaks xhosa, he gets a special job from his boss to spy on Nelson. James as a character takes his job very seriously and he is also a racist. After weeks of doing his work he starts to see at Mandela is a person and not an animal, he starts to see that Mandela and the other prisoners have done nothing wrong, that they are just normal people that fights for black people’s freedom. James starts to help Mandela to see his family, although the other prison guards and their families start to be mean to James and his family. James doesn’t care about what others think of him, and stands up for what he means. James is a dynamic character because in the beginning he works against the coloured people, and in the end he works with the coloured people. The quotation “It’s better to be a Lion for a day, than a sheep all your life” fits James because he suddenly got very brave.

                17. Gregory was the main character in this movie he spent much time with Nelson Mandela. His character changed a lot in this movie. At first hi thought that the blacks were terrorist that wanted to kill all the whites and take their land. He treated the black very badly and showed little respect. After he started to see how the blacks had it in this situation, he started to feel sorry for the blacks. He even started to help Mandela to send a present home to his children. He was the only one that taught that the blacks where the innocent people. He started to realize that his job is killing innocent people. The prisoners haven’t done anything wrong, just because of what media tells us or what color it’s on our skin. Nelson Mandela’s quote says “May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.” In this movie Gregory made some choices that he believed would make it better for the black even tho it could leave to that he could lose his job. About James life we can learn to just trust or self and don’t do the same thing that everyone else is doing.

                18. To stand up and ask questions about things you see as wrong, even when everyone else in the society see it as right, takes a personality with a lot of mental strength. James Gregory, from the film Farewell Bafana, is a person who embodies the courage to stand alone. Gregory’s personality changed after he met Nelson Mandela at Robben Island while guarding his cell. He saw that the colored people weren’t terrorists, but just people who wanted equal rights independently of their skin color. This made Gregory dynamic. Gregory saw what the apartheid system did to the colored people, and instead of ignoring it like everyone else was, he asked questions that no one else dared to. He was able to search for answers and reflect even when he and his family felt the harsh consequences of social isolation. This showed that Gregory had a strong and independent mind. Mahatma Gandhi once said, ‘’You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” Similar to the above words, Gregory stood up for the black people when he saw that the apartheid treated them in an inhumane fashion. Having the courage to stand up for the things you see as wrong and having independent thoughts and opinions about things, is something we all could learn from today.

                19. James was a racist man at the begining. In the begining he tought that the black people was terrorists and that all they wanted was to destroy the comunity to the whites. He works in prison and chck mails and watch over Nelson Mandela who was in jail. He start to talk to Mandela and they get a friendship because of his job. James starts to realize that the white people are doing the wrong thing and that the balcks just wanted peace. James is also a husband and a father. When James was little he grew up amongs the black on a farm. In my opinion James is brave that helps Mandela and do against everyone else. He has own opinions and follows them to. James is strong mentaly and brave because he risk his life to help others to get a better life.
It always seems impossible util its done. This is a qouotation by Nelson Mandela that describes James very good. Because when he started to see that the black people where treated wrong he was the only one of the white people who saw it. And he starting doing small things to help Mandela and his family but at the end it was worth it and Mandela got out of prison.
Trough James`s life you can learn to follow your own opinions and not what everyone else does. And you can learn to never give up because at the end it`s worth it.

                20. james gregory is the main character in the movie called goodbye bafana. he belives that the blacks are evil people but when he is suposted to watch mandela while he is in the cell  but he watch him for so long that he sees whats happening with mandela and that he has done nothing wrong the other prisoners also havent done anything wrong, after a while he start to feel mercy for them and he start doing things like sending the mail to him and that is not legal in the prison and he lets mandela speak xhosa with his wife witch is theyre language and thats also ilegal.

mr gregory is mentaly strong because he faces the problems he meet, he is also very brabe because he does alot of ilegal things wile helping mandela. james is realy a realy good person, he first thaught the black were terrorist but late on in the film he realises that they are just normal like everybody else. ''no one has the power to shatter your dreams unless you give it to them'' this quote fits james cause he didnt let anybody stop him with helping mandela and the other prisoners. james was doing the right thing in the movie and if it would have been me id done the same and the things he learned me was that dont let anybody stop you from helping or not be racist against people do what you want.

                21. James Gregory is a very strong person, he realizes what hes government is making people believe and sees that it is wrong and chooses to stand up for the blacks rights. He is a very brave person that dares to stand up for his own opinions and he doesnt care about what the consequences might be, he is also independentand is not influenced by what his colleagues and family/friends think about him. James started changing when he was transfered to Robben Island and was set in charge of the censor office, where they censor the letters the inmates recieve, he started getting to know Nelson Mandela and started to realize that the NAC really was provoked by the government and forced to take action against the apartheid regime and try to make South Africa a free land for all people regardless of their race or ethnicity. James Gregory is a person we all could take inspiration from and learn from and stop caring about differences and embrace equalities. Winston Chruchill once said: ''You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life.'' this quotation fits well with James because he made alot of enemies but kept on going regardless of what people thought about him.

                22. James Gregory is a prison guard from South-Africa. Through out the movie “Farwell Bafana” we can see personality change in Gregory. At first we met a man who followed others. At the end we see an independent, strong and brave man. Gregory showed independent thinking and actions when he stole the freedom charter. With steeling the freedom charter, with he could go to jail for, he risked his life. The quote “Do what’s right, not what’s easy” summarizes Gregory perfectly. Gregory decided for him self and stood up for what he believed in, although this made him unpopular with his collogues. He chose to take the hay way and fought for his moral believes. He taught us that we should fight for what’s impotent and not settle.

                24. As young in life we do and think as we are told. We take decisions how we are taught. Sometimes we face problems with that, but it is then you have to learn from your mistakes. Gregory is a strong person; he realized he had been taught wrong. He changed perspective on the dark skinned and took new decisions which could have cost his life. It was really hard for Gregory to change this perspective, and go against all his friends and associates. He got bad confidence, how they where treated, he started to drink and smoke more. He got more aggressive and slept less. “You’re thought are not my thoughts” Similar to James, he did what he thought was right and it ended very well!

                25. James Gregory is the main character in the film “Goodbye Bafana”, he was a prison guard on the island Robben Island. His personality changes a lot in the movie, at the beginning of the movie Gregory was the just same as every other white in South- Africa, racist and meant that the coloured was terrorists. While he works in the prison he starts to ask question about the government. He didn’t believe in what the media said about the coloured. Gregory is an independent man that stands up for his own opinion; he has his own thoughts even if it made him unpopular. He is also very brave, he risks his job and family to fight for what he meant was right and he didn’t gave up until he reached his goal. “What we think, we become” is a quotation of Buddha. I mean this quote is pretty much a summary of Gregory; he started thinking and saw the big differences in the community. He went from being a racist to help the coloured people. Gregory has taught me that if there is a problem, you need to face the it and try to fix it, not to just avoid it.
